Free Stanford iPhone developer course at iTunes U

0 yorum

If you're anxious to develop your own iPhone app, don't know where to start, and find high-pedigree university instruction appealing, consider learning the art of the iPhone from Stanford University. You won't need a high-school degree to take the class--the school's Computer Science Department has begun posting material from its 10-week iPhone Application Programming course in iTunes U.

"There's a lot of interest in the iPhone," said Brent Izutsu, Stanford's project manager for Stanford on iTunes U, in the university's press release. "This course provides an excellent opportunity for us to show the breadth and depth of our curriculum and the innovation of our students."

Videos and slides from the classes will be posted at Stanford on iTunes U two days after each class meeting. You will be given access to the same materials and notes that the students enrolled in the class get. But don't get too excited--iTunes subscribers don't collect college credits upon completion.

Stanford has posted four class sessions as of press time: Introduction to Mac OS X and Cocoa Touch; Using Objective-C, Foundation Framework; Custom Classes, Memory Management, and ObjC Properties; and Interface Builder, Controls, Target-Action. You can find them at iTunes U.

The Wall Street Journal: There's an app for that, and it's free

0 yorum

Extra! Extra! You don't have to pay extra to get Wall Street Journal content on your iPhone.

Good news for news junkies and anyone who can still stomach reading about the stock market: The Wall Street Journal just took the wraps off an eponymous iPhone app, offering news, video, and even podcasts. Better still, there's no charge for the app--or the content.

That may surprise WSJ subscribers who pay a little over $100 per year for unrestricted Web access. But it puts the app on an even footing with the New York Times and USA Today apps, among others, which also provide news at no charge.

The WSJ app bears a striking resemblance to the Times app, with a five-icon toolbar that spans the bottom of the screen and a banner ad just above that. (Hey, somebody has to foot the bill.)

But this isn't just the Times repackaged. For one thing, the WSJ app seems to load much faster than the notoriously pokey Times, and it sports prominent buttons for Video and WSJ Radio.

The latter consists of a two-minute podcast that starts streaming immediately when you tap through. But it lacks a date/time-stamp, so there's no way to know without listening if it's any newer than the last podcast you played.

As for the videos, they flat-out refused to play, though we'll cut the app some slack on its first day: No doubt looky-loos have stampeded the WSJ's servers.

Other amenities include a button to save articles for future reference and another to e-mail them to friends. Plus, you can customize the toolbar with any of 16 icons, giving you one-tap access to sections like Tech, Opinion, and Barron's.

Thus, despite a few early kinks, the WSJ app is sure to delight the business crowd--especially considering that they don't have to tap their slush funds to get it.

Play trombone on the iPhone

Smule(Credit: CNET)

Smule, the makers of popular musical iPhone application, Ocarina, has just released a new music application today that pushes its social music experiment even further. Leaf Trombone (99 cents) lets you "play" your iPhone like a trombone by sliding your finger on the touch screen to create different notes and you can even play with a musicbox-like accompaniment.

(Credit: CNET)

After you launch Leaf Trombone, you can practice on your own to the tune of several user-uploaded old standbys like Auld Lang Syne, Yesterday, and even Happy Birthday. To help you follow the notes, leaves gently blow across the screen to land on the notes you should play (sort of like Guitar Hero). There also are buttons for raising or lowering your notes one octave so you have more range to play with. To accompany your trombone sound, Leaf Trombone has a wheel on the left side of the interface that performs on its own and sounds like an old-timey music box (no crank required).

What makes Leaf Trombone especially interesting, though, is the capability to take your talents online. By choosing the World Stage mode, you can either perform a song to be judged by other random Leaf Trombone users or you can judge songs being played by others. As the musician, you get to play your song before it goes live which lets you redo your song if it wasn't up to your standards. As a judge, you are represented by a smiley face and grouped with two other judges. When the song starts, you can listen to the song, adjust facial expressions for your smiley face, make comments while the song plays, and eventually rate the performance on a scale between 1 and 10. You also can observe the whole play/judge process without being involved if you just want to see how it works. If you receive a high enough score, your name might make it into the most popular list. On the other hand, if you miss your notes, you might end up on the "Debaucles" list (fortunately, we haven't stunk it up quite that bad...yet).

When judging another user, you can give them a rating and add your own comments.

Ocarina was one of the first music applications of its kind to grab iPhone and iPod users' attention with Smule's unique method of making music by blowing into the iPhone's microphone while you press buttons on the touch screen. We think Leaf Trombone will appeal to a variety of users because it offers the same tactile pick-up-and-play capabilities of its predecessor. But with the added capability to perform for and be judged by users around the world, Leaf Trombone is almost a surefire hit at the iTunes App Store.

Sonos updates iPhone controller app, launches limited-time bundle deals

Sonos iPhone Controller App(Credit: Sonos)

A bit of news from the Sonos camp: The company has delivered a minor update to its iPhone Controller app, and offered a short-term bundling deal for new customers.

The company launched its iPhone controller app--which lets any iPhone or iPod Touch control the company's multi-room digital music system--in October of 2008. Many Sonos owners liked the app more than the system's own CR100 remote (which is included in the 2-room, $1,000 system, or available separately for $400). Today's minor upgrade adds multilingual support (Dutch, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Swedish, in addition to English), alarm and sleep functions, and PC-free setup (instruct your Sonos to access network music folders without the need to install software on a computer). The upgrade also enables the playback of DRM-encoded WMA files from the likes of Zune Marketplace. Sonos is also trumpeting the fact that Apple's decision to drop DRM from its iTunes Store means that newly purchased iTunes music will stream perfectly on the Sonos system (though DRM iTunes music you've purchased in the past will need a de-DRM'd version--which requires an upgrade fee through Apple.)

Separately, Sonos is also running a short-term bundling deal for its hardware. Those who don't want to go for the $1,000 2-room bundle (one ZP90 base station, one ZP120 amplified base station, and one CR100 controller) can instead get $150 to $200 off when purchasing either the ZP90 or the ZP120 plus the CR100. The deal runs through May 31, 2009.

We've long prodded Sonos to lower its prices, but $600 to $700 for a one-room system is still too rich for our blood. If you've already got an iPhone or iPod Touch, a better choice would be to pick up a single ZP90 for $350, and just grab the free Sonos Controller App--you'll just need a stereo or a pair of powered speakers to hear your music. (That's assuming you don't already have an Apple TV or an AirPort Express--in which case you can cobble together your own Apple-ized multi-room audio system as well, albeit without access to the wider range of non-iTunes music services available on the Sonos.)

Check out Sonos' demo video of the iPhone Controller app below (we've tested it, and can vouch that the video is a good representation of the software and hardware.)

Also of note: we haven't finished our evaluation of Cisco's Sonos competitor, the Linksys Wireless Home Audio System. That's because we've been having some network issues with the unit. We're hoping a recent firmware upgrade (and the fact that we're using different test PCs and routers) will help address the issues so we can compare and contrast the Linksys to the Sonos soon. In the meantime, consult our list of top network audio systems for the best recommendations.

Apple releases iPhone OS 3 beta 3 to developers

0 yorum

(Credit: Apple, Inc.)
Apple's engineering department still isn't sparing the horses for iPhone OS 3.0. It has released beta 3 to developers only two weeks after Beta 2 was released.

Like most Apple updates, we suspect that the new beta 3 includes several stability and performance enhancements that might make the beta more pleasing to use if you are testing it. We've heard from some early beta testers complaining (see article comments) about the number of issues they were experiencing with the previous releases.

It is to early to tell what kinds of changes have been made in Beta 3, but we suspect it will not take long for people to discover them.

CNET had additional coverage about iPhone OS 3.0 here, here, here, and here.

World of Apple has republished the seed notes for the for the iPhone Beta 3 SDK listing changes made to various components such as Xcode, Interface Builder, and Dashcode.

Developers and beta testers, let us know about your experiences with this latest iPhone OS 3.0 beta in the comments.
